Forays into Color
As Julio Rondo (b. Sotrondio, Spain, 1952; lives and works in Berlin) sees it, painting does not just depict the world, it unlocks a new realm of experience. Working on glass, Rondo layers bands of acrylic paint whose combination yields a geometric composition. Translucencies, superimpositions, and colorful reflections engender a subtle tension between surface and depth, the visible and the hidden. In his art, glass emerges as not merely a support for the painting but an integral part of the picture. Rondo has remained true to his unique technique for many decades, relying on pigments he mixes himself and homemade brushes. Although he has been influenced by urban spaces and music by the Rolling Stones and others, his most recent abstractions are not an attempt to translate these inspirations into paintings—they stand on their own, both below and above one another.
The catalog JULIO RONDO showcases the artist’s most recent works and includes an essay by Matthias Harder. It is released on the occasion of the exhibition TURN IT OVER at Galerie Andreas Binder, Munich.
