Zhanna Kadyrova

Flying the Flag of Resistance

One of the most acclaimed Ukrainian artists of her generation, Zhanna Kadyrova has produced a fascinating body of work engaging with the transformations of her country since the early 2000s and its Soviet-imperialist legacy. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, she has become one of the strongest artist voices on the international stage, foregrounding her country’s cause through her compelling work.

This first monograph is published as part of a sustained collaboration that emerged out of a joint exhibition project between Kunstverein and PinchukArtCentre.

Edited by curators Christoph Platz-Gallus and Björn Geldhof, the publication brings together contributions by Oleksii Arunian, Kateryna Botanova, Pascal Gielen, Shubigi Rao, Daria Shevtsova, Pavel Sterec, and Paula Toppila, offering a range of critical perspectives on the artist’s practice. These are interwoven with Kadyrova’s own commentaries on current and past works, related with her characteristic ironically intoned humor and sharp insight.
