In the Laboratory of Form

Alois Riedl (b. St. Marienkirchen, Austria, 1935; lives and works in Brunnenthal, Austria) eschews naturalistic representation, evocative titles, and elaborate color combinations in his practice.

The selection presented in the exhibition catalogue Ohne Titel (Untitled) focuses on a series of works produced between 1975 and 1985 that crystallize the emotional and expressive power of his practice. They exemplify Riedl’s distinctive visual language, which oscillates between figuration and abstraction. Here, even the simplest pieces of furniture provide ample inspiration. Looking at these works, one is tempted to discern upholstered cushions within the dense fields of color or to recognize the silhouette of an armchair or table in the interplay of volumes and slender forms.
