Angelika Bartholl

Seven Pieces
Kunstraum Bogenhausen

An Exhibition in Seven Parts

Magical and scientific thought merge in the work of Angelika Bartholl (b. Hamburg, 1963; lives and workes in Munich) to form a holistic system in which complex geometrical bodies and mathematical models crop up. In addition to subtle drawings and collages, objects and installations, she has created a series of paintings with rich colors that are interwoven in several layers with woolen thread to exude a sense of something precious and compressed alike. The sleeves for her works, which she sews from untreated cotton with the work titles printed on them, not only provide functional protection but also a visible classification system for an artistic balancing act between revealing and concealing.

Designed as a virtual exhibition, the catalogue Seven Pieces presents Bartholl’s real, existing pieces in connection with imagined works in virtual spaces. With essays by Veit Loers, Walter Kugler, Johan af Klint, and a conversation between Brigitte Martin and the artist.
