Photography at Its Bicentennial

From the very start, the history of photography has always also been a history of efforts to stem its disappearance, which takes countless forms. The essays in the new FUNDUS volume Auflösungs/erscheinungen. Positionen zum fotografischen Verschwinden (Dissolution phenomena. Positions on photographic dis/appearance) turn the spotlight on a selection of striking examples. The instability of photographic images and their physical supports represents just one way in which photography as a material object, as a technical visual medium, as a vehicle of information, and as a metaphor has interacted, and continues to interact, with the semantic field of disappearance: in processes and states of interference and noise, for instance, of loss and absence, of censorship, erasure and the dissolution of meaning. These phenomena affect individual images, their motifs, and specific techniques; they occur, and we encounter them, in specific ways in everyday life, in the professional handling of photographs, and in the medium’s artistic uses. Edited by Dennis Jelonnek (German Center for Art History Paris) and Aïcha Revellat (University of Basel), the volume of essays is rounded out by creative contributions on the subject.
