DIE BEWERTUNG DER KUNST
Kunstmuseum Reutlingen

Systems of Value and Evaluation in Art

The exhibition Die Bewertung der Kunst at Kunstmuseum Reutlingen gathers the works of four artists who reflect on the crisis of representation from a variety of angles and compares them to develop a historical account of the critique of representation, looking back to the seminal exhibition Pictures held at the Artists Space, New York, in 1977 to spotlight pioneers and alternative conceptual formulations. Works by Jack Goldstein, Ketty La Rocca, Josef Kramhöller, and Klaus Merkel exemplify different stages between 1970 and 2000 in which the nexus between representation, images, and reality unravels and is tied together in new ways. The works are drawn from the Kienzle Art Foundation, which has undertaken a multiyear project of recharting and reassessing the theoretical constructions of art history in exhibitions and publications.

The accompanying catalogue expands on the concerns examined in the group exhibition with an extensive essay by the curator Fabian Ginsberg.
