Women Architects in Twentieth-Century Munich

The work of women architects has remained a blind spot in our knowledge about the twentieth century. That is also true for the history of Munich—which buildings in the city were designed by women? We know little about them, and the literature is sparse.

FRAUEN BAUEN München showcases the work of modernist and late modernist women architects in Munich and presents a first-ever survey of selected buildings they designed. The book introduces us to the completed structures and projects of Marita Adam, Bea Betz, Annelise Eichberg, Ingrid Küttinger, Ulrike Lauber, Hanna Löv, Traudl Maurer, Brigitte Henning, Roswitha Näbauer, Mechthild Siedenburg as Planungsgemeinschaft Zwischenräume, Maya Reiner, Christin Scheiblauer, Helga Schnierle, Roswitha Then Bergh, Doris Thut, and Grete Wirsing and sheds light on the genesis of their designs, the barriers they had to overcome, and the creative solutions devised by leading women architects.
