Art & Education – An Anthology
Can art be taught? And
if so, how? These questions have occupied every generation of artists since the
Renaissance and have prompted countless writings on the topic since then. This
anthology illuminates said questions in the contemporary context and brings
together texts by artists who have articulated strong positions on their own
teaching, training artists in general, and the social responsibilities of
making art. The aim is, on the one hand, to record contemporary approaches to
teaching artists and, on the other hand, to supplement discussions at art
colleges with a historical perspective.
In addition to a brief outline of the history of art academies and an extensive bibliography, this volume compiles and comments on artists’ writings since 1953 by Ad Reinhardt, David Smith, Georg Meistermann, Marcel Duchamp, Barnett Newman, Daniel Buren, Robert Filliou, Allan Kaprow, Joseph Beuys, Bruce Nauman, Agnes Martin, Adrian Piper, Dieter Roth, Paul Thek, Bridget Riley, John Miller, Gerhard Theewen, Thomas Huber, Marina Abramovic, Thomas Kapielski, Eva Meyer, Eran Schaerf, Alexander Roob, and Ulrike Grossarth.
Elke Bippus (b. 1963) is Professor of Theory and History of Art at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK).
Michael Glasmeier (b. 1951 in Bochum) taught art theory at the University of the Arts (HfK) Bremen and works as a writer and curator. His work focuses on the visual arts’ diverse relationships to the fields of music, language, film, photography, theater, and comedy.
