EXTENSIONS OF SELF
Francisco Carolinum Linz

Art and AI

The exhibition and book project Extensions of Self gathers works by eleven international artists scrutinizing how artificial intelligence relates to us humans, whether we understand the systems and logics that underlie it, and how it may impact, say, our own authorship. The project not only showcases processes of creative collaboration between human and machine, it also spotlights the influence we grant the tools over the definition of our identities. And it raises the question: do algorithms and AI applications further cement societal structures and inequalities, or might they help us discover novel and multilayered understandings of what is “normal” or “beautiful”?

Extensions of Self explores possible ways of engaging artificial intelligence in dialogue to chart a new approach to coping with the trauma of the current Anthropocene. With essays by Paul Feigelfeld, Eva Fischer, Martina Mara, Brooklyn Pakathi, Maria Rudakova, and Helena Schmidt.
