Frauke Dannert (b. Herdecke, Germany, 1979; lives and works in Cologne, Germany) works with found and collected materials—from scans of plants to photographs of architecture. In her collages the artist creates the delicate shapes of dancing, winding, and precariously balancing elements. Her works straddle the divisions between the organic and the architectonic, between real and imaginative spaces, unlocking a space of associations, not unlike cloud formations in which we can identify an unending stream of shapes.

The artist edition Restless Birds was created in conjunction with her monograph, Collage und Raum. Combining and mediating between things of different nature is an essential quality of Dannert’s artistic practice, which the work embodies in both in its form and content: created through frottage, collage, and drawing, it is the product of a synthetic process; and through its stylized yet dynamic forms and textures, it becomes at once organic and abstract.
