Sensual Habit
Words rather than pictures constitute the backbone of Job Koelewijn’s (b. 1962; lives and works in Amsterdam) oeuvre, serving as source and material for his works. The conceptual artist works in the media of site-specific installation, video, photography, and sculpture, but also in prose, literature, and performative reading. Since 2006, he has spent exactly forty-five minutes—the length of one of his audiocassettes—every day recording his voice as he reads out aloud. The recordings underlie painted pictures while also entering a creative archive of his readings. Although his works take different forms, they are at heart always interventions into reality that aim to intensify the experience of a place or a moment in time, heighten conscious awareness, and rouse the spirit.
The catalogue raisonné Works 1990–2025 is rounded out by writings by Dominic van den Boogerd, Christina Li, and Julia Mullié and a conversation between Maria van Oosterhout and the artist.
