Karim Aïnouz

Blast! 2024

Places of Longing

As an internationally acclaimed film director, screenwriter, and visual artist, Karim Aïnouz (b. Fortaleza, Brazil, 1966; lives and works in Berlin) has built an extensive oeuvre ranging from award-winning cinematographic works to short films and installations. His work encompasses multitudes: contributions to queer experimental cinema, intriguingly complex leads, explorations of his biography as a Brazilian-Algerian-French filmmaker, and more. His films have been screened at renowned festivals including the Berlin International Film Festival (Nardjes A., 2020; Futuro Beach, 2014) and the Cannes Film Festival (Firebrand, 2023; The Silver Cliff, 2011; Madame Satã, 2002). In addition to feature films, he has directed documentaries such as Mariner of the Mountain (2023) and Central Airport THF (2018), as well as the successful HBO series Alice (2008).

The edition Blast was created in connection with the collaboration on the book compilation Blast, which is the first comprehensive overview of Aïnouz’s photographic work. For each of his films, he creates a collection of photographs. Snapshots of friends and strangers, landscapes and places that might serve as filming locations, and very personal glimpses of details, textures, and materials that inspire his stories. The edition comprises two photographs, which are presented as a diptych.
