Keine Kunst für Ängstliche
The art of Katinka Pilscheur (b. Herdecke an der Ruhr, 1974; lives and works in Berlin) ranges across painting, sculpture, and architecture. Pilscheur draws on her unique understanding of the exhibition space to create art that probes the limits of space and matter. Her use of space is twofold—it is her source of inspiration as well as the blank canvas or untouched clay she shapes to her requirements. This double action engenders three-dimensional works that function as both art and architecture for an encompassing aesthetic experience. Using mundane materials and taking inspiration from everyday life, Pilscheur challenges not only our idea of space but also the concept of art. Her strangely indeterminate objects and unconventional materials, though they may seem familiar, are positioned and altered in ways that transform them into something we have never experienced before.
Katinka Pilscheur’s first monograph presents works created between 2003 and 2015. It includes an essay by Jurriaan Benschop and a conversation between Magdalena Kröner and the artist.
