Historic Visual Sources and Gestural Liberty
On monumental or modest canvases, in bold or muted compositions: Lars Teichmann’s (b. Burgstädt, 1980; lives and works in Berlin) motifs are informed by art-historical references—Diego Velázquez, the French salon painters of the nineteenth century, Japanese woodcuts; he is especially interested in the classic basic formal structure. Teichmann’s characteristic interplay between distinctive black pigments and bright paints applied in dynamic painterly gestures fuses ground and object. He creates intensely colorful still lifes or anonymous and sometimes spectral figures who bring his canvases to life and populate his imposing oeuvre in many variations.
With an extensive plate section and essays by Julia Behrens and Heinz Stahlhut, the publication Die 10 Kapitel der Malerei offers a comprehensive introduction to the different periods of Lars Teichmann’s oeuvre.
