Das Lied der Straße
Biennale für Freiburg 2

“The participating artists’ voices pointed up implicit and explicit parameters of the street and the determination to engage in their ongoing renegotiation.” —Paula Kommoss, artistic director and curator, Biennale für Freiburg 2

Titled The Song of the Street, Biennale für Freiburg’s second edition explored the street as a political space and scene where the public sphere comes to life. In close collaboration with the invited artists and local members of the community, new formats and works of art were produced for the Biennale that explicitly tied in with the city and activated it as a field of experimentation, uncovering hidden narratives, facilitating unexpected experiences, and creating moments of dialogue and engagement.

The accompanying publication Das Lied der Straße documents the Biennale’s diverse program. Selected contributions provide insights into participating artists’ research processes, share actions in public settings with the readers, and invite them to immerse themselves in the feminist history of film and the street. With contributions by Maximiliane Baumgartner, Michael Koltan, Gudrun Leser, Hitsville Soldiers, Paula Kommoss, Eva Kuhn, Aaliyah Lauterkranz, Alejandra Rosenfeld, and Torch.

Biennale für Freiburg 2 took place in February–July 2023.
