The Austrian Pavilion at the 15th Gwangju Biennale
Liesl Raff (b. Stuttgart, 1979; lives and works in Vienna) explores the subtleties and boundaries of physical and social interactions through the experimental use of various materials. In her objects and installations, the artist employs latex to highlight its adaptable and shape-shifting properties. Raff works gently with the materials, learns from them, and creates spaces for dialogue to bridge the gap between the artwork and the viewers.
For the 15th Gwangju Biennale, Raff transforms the Austrian Pavilion at the LEEKANGHA Art Museum into not only an immersive installation but also a stage for performance evenings, a cabaret, and an underground club. Raff creates corridors with large, purple-tinted, cast latex sheets that arrange around a stage platform. Club Liaison reflects the collaborative and experimental work and includes texts on Raff’s works by Marianne Dobner, by the curators Fiona Liewehr and Carolina Nöbauer, an introspective production diary by Cathrin Mayer, as well as contributions from the performers Luca Bonamore and Lau Lukkarila, Stina Force, Haepaary, Hyeji Nam, Danielle Pamp, Karolina Preuschl, and Alex Franz Zehetbauer.
