Maki Na Kamura (b. Osaka, lives and works in Berlin) is an artist whose roots lie in Japan. She moved to Germany by herself in the mid-1990s. In 2013, she was awarded the Falkenrot Prize. Christoph Tannert praises the conceptual rigor of her paintings: “Color floods her work in a rush of ecstasy. Color creates space creates landscape and in so doing exhibits itself. The picture has no need for the distinction between concretion and abstraction. (...) Working with color forces the artist to plan ahead.” Glancing at the landscapes, we seem to discern numerous skyscrapers as well as a few human figures. Yet a closer look reveals the buildings to be multiplications of Caspar David Friedrich’s townscapes of Greifswald.
The book offers an overview of the work Maki Na Kamura has created in the past three years and is published on occasion of her solo exhibition at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien. With an essay by Christoph Tannert.
