Representations of Nature in the Digital Age

Markus Huemer’s (b. Linz, 1968; lives and works in Berlin) paintings chart the interfaces of our perception, scrutinizing the interaction between image and reality in the context of digital media.

A Football Pitch Must Be Free from Trees turns the spotlight on landscapes, plant still lifes, and pictures of flowers in Huemer’s art. All paintings were created on the basis of digital images of the sort that circulate on the internet and on social platforms; the artist never saw the motifs with his own eyes in reality. In other instances, such as the flower pictures, he made 3D scans of the motifs and subjected them to digital postprocessing.

The publication gathers the central bodies of work representing nature in Markus Huemer’s oeuvre—over five hundred works from the past twenty-five years. It is the first book to offer a comprehensive presentation of this strand of his art. With writings by Stephan Berg, Elisabeth Fiedler, Marijana Kolarić, Lisa Ortner-Kreil, Peter Peer, and Ulrich Tragatschnig.
