Markus Huemer

Ich grüße meinen Vater, meine Mutter und ganz besonders meine Eltern

The “Legitimacy” of Painting in the Digital Age

Markus Huemer’s (b. Linz, 1968; lives and works in Berlin) generation of Austrian artists did pioneering work in the field of media art in the 1990s. His works straddle the divide between painting and digital art. Despite their austere palette, his landscapes, which he typically lays out on canvases in large formats, are animated by a naturalistic aspiration. Another recurring theme is the observation of blanks and domains of perception located in an “in between” or referring to something is neither actually existing nor visible.

The publication Ich grüße meinen Vater, meine Mutter und ganz besonders meine Eltern puts the focus on Markus Huemer’s meditations on nature, which play with the tensions between art history and the natural sciences. With essays by Martin Engler and Inga Kleinknecht.
