The Interaction and Interdependence of Media

In these detailed individual analyses, Michael Diers focuses on current visual phenomena in everyday life, politics, and art. Alongside painting, graphics, and photography, he also discusses film and video. The central concern of the individual investigations is to pay tribute to the specific aesthetic, medial, and artistic qualities of every image discussed. He presents works by William Eggleston, Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Alfred Hitchcock, and Pipilotti Rist, among others. On the basis of these exemplary analyses, Diers develops a critical theory of the image grounded in art history.

Michael Diers (b. 1950 in Werl, Germany) is one of Germany’s foremost art historians and professors. As an author and editor, he has published extensively on the history and theory of art and the image, as well as on political iconography. He is a co-editor of the Aby Warburg’s collected writings.
