Wall Painting for the 21st Century
The oeuvre of David Novros (b. Los Angeles, 1941; lives and works in New York) is distinguished by intensely colorful large-format paintings on multipart canvases as well as site-specific works that operate beyond pictorial space to engage with architectural contexts. Already in 1966, one of his paintings was included in the influential exhibition Systemic Painting at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Novros gained recognition in particular for his “portable murals”—polychrome movable paintings in large formats that imitated sprawling wall paintings without being permanently fixed to the architecture of a building. After Donald Judd commissioned Novros to exe- cute a fresco in his home and studio on Spring Street in 1970, he increasingly focused on creating wall paintings, which he referred to as “painting in place.”
The catalogue David Novros – Painting, featuring texts by Alexander Klar, Toby Kamps, Matthew Levy, and Ifee Tack, is being published on occasion of the largest retrospective of Novros’ oeuvre to date. It brings together spanning sixty years of artistic practice, including paintings, copper reliefs, architectural models, and works on paper.
