A Singular Voice in North-American Art Critique
The poet and art critic Peter Schjeldahls (b. 1942 in Fargo, North Dakota; d. 2022 in Bovina, New York) published countless art reviews from the sixties until his death, which regularly appeared in the Village Voice, Art in America, New Yorker, Artforum, New York Times, Vanity Fair, and Vogue, among others. His curiosity and wit, his poetic voice and his careful internalization of what he perceived made him one of the most important art critics of his generation.
His reflections range from Andrea Mantegna, Diego Velázquez, and Gustave Courbet to Henri Matisse, Anselm Kiefer, and Gerhard Richter, as well as younger generations of artists from the eighties and nineties, such as Jeff Koons, Barbara Kruger, and David Salle.
Edited by Maaretta Jaukkuri, curator and professor of contemporary art.
