Powerful Topographies
History and places, language and spaces form the parameters of Renate Herter’s installations, interventions, sound pieces, and textual works. In recent years, photographs of her own body have increasingly moved to the forefront of her work. She presents the female body as a body that is ageing, that has aged. Eschewing any kind of romanticism, she dissects it into fragments and reassembles it into montages that refuse a superficial view. Despite their compositional rigor, her reworkings of the original motifs create new, poetically sculptural images that go beyond the familiar forms of classical nude photography, ironically suspending bodily boundaries and thus creating realities of their own.
Based on the most recent series of works Eigensinnige Körper – Heimliche Territorien, Renate Herter’s new, richly illustrated monograph KörperKlangRaum offers an exploration of her work since the eighties with texts by Kat Lawinia Gorska, Karin Scheel, Julia Wallner, and a conversation between Ingrid Wagner and the artist.
