The rigorously constructed surfaces, colors, and lines Roman Lang (b. Neumarkt i. d. Oberpfalz, Germany, 1976; lives and works in Düsseldorf) layers in strata and multiplies yield a potentiated structured chaos. Suprematist tendencies are pervasive in his paintings. Straight lines converging at sharp angles and producing geometric forms. Vector shapes that align or, sometimes, clash. Multitudes of triangles differentiated by a variety of chromatic gradations. Taken together, these elements feel like a vortex of time that pulls the beholder in for a bumpy ride between future and past and finally spits him out in an explosive now. Lang’s painting transports you straight to a neo-constructivist 1980s party where Kazimir Malevich and El Lissitzky play the classic arcade game Tron on a flat-screen monitor set on its side.
