EYE (Mother is a bitch)

Over the past twenty-five years, Šejla Kamerić (b. Sarajevo, 1976; lives and works in Sarajevo, Berlin and Istria) has produced a remarkable number of works based on self-presentational gestures. They reveal her enduring allegiance to the format of self-portraiture, but at the same time manifest her unconventional comprehension of the self-referential practice.

The new edition EYE consisting of double-sided transparent handmade collages, is part of the photo series Mother is a bitch conceived in 2021. Same as her earlier self-representations, the artist directs and controls the spectacle of femininity that she performs. This time at stake is a female body, or part of it, which over centuries had haunted Western cultures: the “evil” eye that belongs to the “evil” body of the witch.
