Of Lacunas, Intentions, and Mistakes
Thomas Thiede’s (b. Plauen, 1967; lives and works in Fischbachau and Hamburg) oeuvre can be divided into two strands: one consists of drawings and installations, the other of joint projects with collaborators like the filmmaker, writer, philosopher, and annalist Alexander Kluge (b. Halberstadt, 1932; lives and works in Munich).
In the book project Bricks of Modernity, Kluge and Thiede continue their interdisciplinary dialogue. Since 2017, their ongoing exchange of ideas has engendered collaborative works, fifteen of which constitute the core of this book. All revolve around our relation to the past and our gaze into the future. Under titles like In the Constellation of the Tank, Constructivism 2, Strange Vehicles on the Road, or Portrait of a Single Organ Pipe among 17000, they scan, analyze, and comment on our fascinating present and its manifold contradictions. An introductory conversation between the philosopher, poet, and curator Asmus Trautsch and the two artists as well as an essay by curator Julia Marchand explore the intentions behind the works and their genesis.
