„(…) ein gelber Hund läuft um einen großen ausweglosen Gegenstand und dann kommt das was man nur mit den Augen erzählen kann“ Herta Müller

Ulrich Bittmann’s (b. Cologne, 1950; lives and works in Mustin) oeuvre in painting operates between the poles of perception, materiality, and space. His works probe the interrelation of form and meaning and open up poetic pictorial spaces anchored by human encounters and emotions. In time-consuming painting processes, he layers colors, superimposes forms, and distorts perspectives. The point of departure for his art is always bodily reality, which he defamiliarizes and reinterprets using gestural, abstract, and sensory elements.

thrawn is Bittmann’s first monograph, gathering works from two decades. The volume is rounded out by essays by Nadine Grünewald, Jens Hasenberg, Rudi Kargus, Larissa Kikol, and Annekathrin Siems.
