Representations of Power and Status

Since the late 1980s, Yan Pei-Ming (b. Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, 1960; lives and works in Dijon, France) has made monumental paintings, often monochromes in large formats, in which he grapples with social and political concerns and his own existence. Meditations on his role as an artist underlie his portraits of himself and family members as well as prominent personalities. They reveal his probing engagement with key works in the history of art and with our fragile life and mortality. Pei-Ming enjoys international renown as one of the most successful Chinese artists; his distinctive and forceful works have been displayed at venues including the Centre Pompidou and the Louvre.

The publication Portraits documents his retrospective exhibition at the Francisco Carolinum, Linz. With an interview with the artist by Alfred Weidinger.
